Fire crews are making progress containing a wildfire that has spread to more than 600 acres in Polk County.
The fire is burning about four miles west of Tryon, North Carolina, and prompted some nearby residents to evacuate over the weekend.
In a Tuesday afternoon update, Polk County officials said the fire was 91% contained — however fire crews planned to suspend work Tuesday night amid high winds in the forecast.
Rain is in the forecast on Wednesday, which could help douse some of the remaining flames, while also increasing the risk of mudslides in areas that have burned.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Forest Service said Tuesday that crews were still battling several fires burning in North Carolina's National Forests.
They include the Falls Dam Fire, the Ramshorn Fire and the Hicks Cemetery fire, which cover about 765 acres in total.
The Falls Dam Fire was 65% contained, the Ramshorn Fire was fully contained and the Hicks Cemetery Fire 40% contained, the Forest Service said.
Crews will continue reinforcing containment lines using natural barriers and improving existing defenses to prevent further spread. Smoke may still be visible within contained areas due to unburned pockets of fuel.
