A New Course for University Research Park

Forty years ago, Charlotte civic leaders were tired of losing research and development companies to Raleigh's Research Triangle and to Atlanta, so they created University Research Park on the city's north end near I-85. The 3,200-acre research campus soon spawned one of Charlotte's largest communities - University City. But growth at University Research Park has leveled-off and major tenants, like Wachovia, face an uncertain future. A group called University City Partners paid $60,000 to have a panel of experts from the Urban Land Institute chart a new course for the Research Park. The panel is recommending dramatic changes. WFAE's Julie Rose spoke with the panel's leader, Houston developer Zane Segal.
