NC Research Campus Labs Open for Final Tours
Today is the last chance for the public to take a look inside new biotech labs at North Carolina Research Campus, before scientists lock the doors and begin their work finding cures for diseases like diabetes. When Dole Foods magnate David Murdock announced his plan to build the $1.5 billion campus on the site of the abandoned Pillowtex plant, there were skeptics. But Kannapolis Mayor Bob Misenheimer says that was before Murdock spent hundreds of millions of dollars on buildings that will be dedicated today. "The main thing was that so many of us didn't understand what was going on initially," says Misenheimer. "But now, the people are looking at this and saying, you know, this man's serious. This man's going to do something." Misenheimer says Kannapolis residents have also been won over by the increase in their property values as a result of the campus. Ten companies and eight universities have already committed to open offices and laboratories at the North Carolina Research Campus. They are expected to create hundreds of high-paying jobs.
