York County smoking ban appears imminent
York County officials last night signaled their plan to move forward with a ban on smoking in restaurants, bars and most other public places. The York County Council was unanimous in support of the smoking ban, even though several council members had previously said they wanted to make an exception for bars. Critics of a smoking ban say officials are meddling in private business rights and the ability for people to make their own decisions about smoking. But York County Council vice chairman Joe Cox says his constituents clearly want him to support the ban. "Well, I've got less than five that have come to me personally and said do not adopt this ordinance, compared to well over 150 (who support it)," says Councilman Cox. Council Vice Chairman Joe Cox thinks any exceptions to the ban are unlikely to pass, since it would put employee health at risk.
