Meck County revises job-posting rules
Mecklenburg County commissioners say they're satisfied Department of Social Services Director Mary Wilson followed appropriate hiring procedures. The board met Wednesday in closed session to discuss how the wife of Charlotte City Councilman Anthony Foxx was hired for a $100,000 job after her position was posted only one day on the county's Web site. The department was under a hiring freeze at the time. They also found the hires of Hollye Monroe and Tracey Evans were consistent with policy. On Wednesday, County Manager Harry Jones decided to require all vacancies be publicly posted for at least six business days. He told WFAE that he couldn't justify posting a job for only one day. "I have to say that Mary did use an ambiguity in the policy. She got the blessings of the county manager to accelerate the hiring process. Had I know it was only going to be for a day, I would not have approved it being posted for only a day," Jones said, adding, "We'll fix that today." Wilson hired Samara Foxx to head the business affairs division of DSS. Foxx's salary is $100,000. Wilson had been Foxx's supervisor at a previous job.
