The historic Metrolina Speedway may soon have a new life as a short-track racing facility that will have room for go-karts and radio-controlled cars. The Speedway Investment Group wants to convert the rundown track into a center where late-model stock cars, replicas of vintage cars and go karts can race. The plans even include two small tracks for radio-controlled cars and a skateboard park. The group says the site will cost $50 million to re-develop and will bring 150 jobs to the Derita neighborhood. Simon Weber, the group's president, says the 7,500 seat center won't compete with Lowes Motor Speedway. "We're doing something that really hasn't been done throughout the country," explains Weber. "We're combining a lot of things together between the different entertainment, the different sports in order to make an all-in-one facility." Charlotte City Council still must approve zoning for the center. If that goes through, the group expects to complete the project by May of next year.
