Charlotte to contribute $1.4 million to libraries

Charlotte City Council has decided to break with custom and give money to the library system. Council voted last night to contribute $1.4 million to the libraries. Usually it's up to the county to pay for them, but libraries are taking a big hit as county commissioners try to plug a massive budget shortfall. The money is more like a trade than a flat-out donation. Commissioners say they'll credit the city's account for the value. But the vote was still close: 6-to-4. Council member Andy Dulin said it isn't the city's responsibility to rescue the libraries. "I cannot in all consciousness support the library bailout tonight, even one time, because I don't think it changes the behavioral pattern," said Dulin. "I think this might be good for them not to be funded so they can get their house in order." Library officials have said they could keep all but four branches open if they get an extra $8 million from the county, city and towns. But the city and county have only committed to giving them $5 million altogether. Warren Turner was one of three council members who changed their minds and decided to give money to the libraries. "It would be very unkind for them to now turnaround and close those libraries in my district," said Turner. "I won't go quietly and I won't let that happen without bringing the citizens' voice forward." Library Board Chair Robin Branstrom says the board will have to run the numbers and see how many branches the money can support.
