A restaurant in Hickory has been voted Best German Restaurant in America. The Old German Schnitzel Haus offers, as you may well guess, all types of schnitzel. Schnitzel is basically flattened, breaded fried meat. But then there are the less familiar-sounding dishes like Sauerbraten and Blaue Forelle. "All our entrees are really German and I don't really like to Americanize them or change them up," says Ulf Menzel who owns the restaurant. He also doesn't like his servers to always be wearing the traditional dirndls and lederhosen which are fixtures in many German-American restaurants. Menzel says that's just not so authentic. Authenticity is what scored him lots of votes and good food, of course. In all, the Old German Schnitzel Haus received about 4,000 votes. The German Deli, the company that runs the contest even sent undercover out-of-town judges to make sure the top vote-getters lived up to their reputations. Two other restaurants in the Carolinas made the top 10. Waldhorn Restaurant in Pineville and Gasthaus Zur Elli in Prosperity, South Carolina.
