Hundreds of mourners turned out in downtown Concord last night for a candlelight vigil to honor murder victim Valerie Hamilton. The 23-year-old was found dead over the weekend after going missing in Charlotte last Wednesday. Her father, Concord Police Chief Merl Hamilton, addressed reporters just before attending his daughter's vigil. "My wife and I would like to thank this entire community for reaching out and helping us through this very difficult time. I've told several people today that this is why we live where we live, because this community is like none other. The man accused of killing his daughter was captured Monday in western New York. Michael Harvey, 34, had lived in that region before moving to the Charlotte area. He was taken into custody at a friend's house. Meanwhile, police say medical examiners were conducting tests Monday to determine Valerie Hamilton's cause of death. Her funeral will be held this afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church in Concord.
