Waddell High To Remain Open; CMS Puts Harding On Closure List
CMS announced late Monday that it's recommending to school board members that E.E. Waddell High School remain open and that Harding University High close. The proposed closing of Waddell had received strong opposition. Both Waddell and Harding have room to spare, but CMS says the difference is Harding is a magnet school. CMS spokeswoman Latarzja Henry says district administrators believe closing Harding instead of Waddell is more in keeping with the guiding principles the school board came up with over the summer. Those principles emphasize home schools. Harding is home to two magnet programs and does not have a local attendance zone. Harding's IB program would go to Waddell, and its math and science program would move to Phillip O. Berry Academy High School. Smith Language Academy would take over Harding's building. The previous CMS plan called for Smith to move into the Waddell building. Here's a news release from CMS announcing the change. Also, WFAE's Lisa Miller explains the new proposal here. CMS has scheduled a forum for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Harding to discuss the proposal.
