It looks like professional lacrosse is coming to Charlotte. A local investment group has been approved for an expansion team in the 10-year-old Major League Lacrosse. The team would begin play in the spring of 2012. Former Bobcats marketing manager Jim McPhilliamy heads the expansion team's investment group. "Charlotte is just a great market for it demographically. It's a very family-friendly sport and Charlotte is a family town," says McPhilliamy. The proposed home for the team is Memorial Stadium near uptown Charlotte, although that deal still needs to be worked out. McPhilliamy wouldn't discuss specifics of a proposed deal to use the stadium, other than he says the team's rent would help pay for repairs to the facility. He says he expects ticket prices to range from $10 to $50. A team name and colors still need to be selected. Major League Lacrosse has six franchises. The others are located in Boston, Toronto, Denver, Annapolis, and Rochester and Long Island, New York.
