Don't Expect Instant Success, Cam Says

Carolina Panthers top draft pick Cam Newton is confident he'll be a successful NFL quarterback, but says it's going to take some time. "It's not something that's going to be instant, like instant grits. (It's going to be more like) collard greens. You've got to let it just sit and wait. But at the same time it's going to be a fun process, I know that," he said Friday at Bank of America Stadium. The Heisman Trophy winner from Auburn is the No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL draft. Newton says he knows he'll have to put in a lot of extra work to meet the expectations that come with being the first player chosen. "Just meeting from 9 to 5 is not going to make you an elite player. You have to go over and beyond," Newton said. "If a person is trying to be an elite player, you have to do something that's more elite that doesn't happen on the norm." The NFL draft continues over the weekend. Second and third-round picks will be selected this evening. Rounds 4 through 7 are Saturday.
