CMS Board Member Wants Lawmakers To Drop Teacher Pay Bill

A controversial bill that would give CMS the authority to change the way teachers are paid passed the state House last month. It would allow the district to do so without support from teachers. But school board member Tom Tate wants the General Assembly to drop the bill and he'll ask his fellow board members to support a resolution along those lines next week. Tate says Superintendent Peter Gorman shared the bill with the board a couple days before it was filed. Tate decided not to make a stink at that point, but he's changed his mind. "The further along we've gotten with the testing, with the complaints that we're hearing, the phone calls, the emails and everything else that I'm hearing about how things are proceeding, I finally determined that I wanted to have the board on record," says Tate. CMS is trying to implement a new plan that would pay teachers based not on longevity or degrees, but on how well their students do. School board members Richard McElrath and Joyce Waddell have said they support Tate's motion. Last week, the school board narrowly voted to keep spending money to implement the new plan known as Pay for Performance.
