CMS Superintendent Peter Gorman announced that he plans to leave the district soon to take a job with the education division of News Corp. He told the school board of his plans this afternoon. Richard McElrath said that was the first he heard of them. "It just shocked me that he would leave in the midst of all this that we're trying to do and for a moment I just said uh-oh." CMS has a lot on its plate right now. The district is getting ready to close and combine several schools over the summer. Gorman has also been trying to implement a controversial Pay for Performance plan for teachers. Board Member Rhonda Lennon says the district's improvement over the past few years makes the job attractive. "This creates a vacancy that we're gonna have people all over this country who know what amazing gains CMS has made - they're gonna be clamoring to come here. I think what this will show this community is the respect CMS has outside the community in the education environment." Gorman plans to leave the district on August 15. The board plans to begin its search for a new superintendent next week.
