UNC Looks Poised To Hire Fedora

UNC-Chapel Hill is ironing out a contract for a new football coach. Multiple media outlets are reporting Larry Fedora is leaving his head coaching position at Southern Miss to take over the tarnished UNC program. OK, this will be a little bit of a stroll through the sports rumor mill. But there are concrete signs now that UNC is close to hiring a new head football coach. UNC's Board of Trustees met this morning to discuss the details of the new coach's contract. The meeting was closed to the public, and a UNC spokeswoman wouldn't say who the new coach is. But she also didn't dispute reports that it's Larry Fedora. The AP and other media outlets reported Fedora has already accepted UNC's head coaching job. This year was Fedora's fourth as the head coach at Southern Miss, and he led the team to an 11-2 record and a Conference USA championship. A Southern Miss spokesman says he couldn't confirm or deny reports that Fedora is heading to UNC. If Fedora does take the job, he'll become the face of a program recovering from scandal. NCAA investigations that began last year found some players cheated in classes and took gifts from agents. The NCAA has yet to rule on UNC's final punishment. A UNC spokeswoman says the Board of Trustees will meet again tomorrow morning to discuss the contract further. The board has to approve the contract before UNC can hire a new football coach.
