City Of Monroe Suspends Nine Police Officers

City of Monroe, N.C.

The Monroe police department is suspending nine of its officers for mishandling court cases. Union County District Attorney Trey Robison announced last month his office dropped charges against 39 people because the officers failed to turn over files and information needed to prosecute the cases.

City spokesman Pete Hovanek says the police department is changing its procedures to try to prevent similar mistakes from happening.

"Officers have large case loads," he says, "and the supervisors will be doing a better job of making sure the officers are doing their job and following through on the report."

In addition, he says, department is assigning a liaison in the DA’s office and is setting up a computer system to track case files.

The five-day suspensions will be staggered to maintain police coverage around the city. The Monroe Police Department has roughly 100 officers.
