The FBI is investigating one of its counterterrorism supervisors, after a woman reportedly stole his gun from an uptown Charlotte hotel room in July.
The New York Times reports that Robert Manson had been drinking heavily and was incapacitated when Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to the Westin hotel early on the morning of July 10. A CMPD report said the agent’s Glock 27 .40-caliber handgun was missing, along with a Rolex watch valued at $6,000 and $60 in cash.
According to the Times, Manson is an FBI unit chief who oversees the agency’s terrorism investigations in the Carolinas and the Midwest. The newspaper cites unnamed sources who said Manson and other agents were in Charlotte for training and had been drinking at the hotel with women who said they were exotic dancers. The theft reportedly occurred after Manson and one of the women went to his hotel room.
In an email to WFAE, the FBI said the incident is the subject of an internal investigation. No arrests have been reported in the theft, and authorities have not recovered the stolen gun.
