A pipe bomb was found at a popular swimming area in Pisgah National Forest over the weekend. WLOS TV reports a man scanning the area with a metal detector found the bomb in shallow water Saturday afternoon.
The man described the device as having black tape around it with a green fuse coming out of the top.
“Due to the fact that it’s unknown how long the device has been in the water that could affect the probability of finding any kind of lead,” Haywood County Sherriff's Office spokesperson Lindsay Regner told WLOS.
Local authorities detonated the bomb safely after alerting local residents. Police say it is safe to return to the area.
