Tree Falls On Car In Matthews, Killing 1 Person
A tree fell on a vehicle and killed a person Sunday afternoon in Matthews.
Matthews Police say the car was traveling on East John Street near Charles Buckley Way around 4:30 p.m. when the tree struck the car. The car continued moving after it was hit by the fallen tree and crashed into the front of the Matthews Church of God, coming to a stop in a residential yard next to the church. The driver was killed and a passenger was injured, police say. The passenger was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. Authorities have not released names.
Police have been redirecting traffic in the area to an alternate route on Highway 74.
Icy roads made slick by continuous rain, sleet and snow throughout the day have caused hazardous conditions for drivers. According to Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services, medics responded to 70 accidents between midnight and 3 p.m. Sunday.
Authorities urge residents to stay off the roads, as they are expected to remain dangerous through Monday.
