Matthews police said they have charged a driver with first-degree murder for a hit-and-run Monday that killed a 79-year-old woman. Vira Nahorna died after she was struck by a vehicle outside the Aldi supermarket in Matthews.
Matthews police chief Clark Pennington spoke Friday afternoon about what investigators learned about the woman charged, 54-year-old Sawan Alshabani.
"In fact, the suspect in this case not only intentionally struck Ms. Nahorna, but attempted to strike at least four other people in the parking lot," Pennington said at the news conference.
Police said the suspect called them an hour after the hit-and-run took place. Officers will take Alshabani into custody once she is released from the hospital, where she has been under medical evaluation.
