Shalom Park Partially Evacuated After Phone Threat; Immigrant Activists To Confront City Council

The Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte says portions of Shalom Park on Providence Road were temporarily evacuated Monday following an anonymous phone threat.

The federation's executive director, Sue Worrel, tells WFAE the threat was deemed not credible by law enforcement, but officers were still treating it with all seriousness. Staff members executed security protocols, and upon receiving an all clear from law enforcement, the park resumed normal business operations.

Monday's partial evacuation follows a series of bomb threats made to Jewish community centers around the country on Monday, including in Asheville, Michigan, Florida, Alabama, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware.

At least five justices suggested during arguments that they may rule in favor of North Carolina resident Lester Packingham Jr., who was convicted of violating a 2008 law aimed at keeping sex offenders off of internet sites that children might use.

His arrest stemmed from a Facebook post in which he praised God for the dismissal of a traffic ticket.
