The Charlotte City Council held a public hearing on Thursday for people who want to finish the last six months of Tariq Bokhari’s term on council. Bokhari resigned from council last month to take a high-ranking transit job in the Trump administration.
Twelve people applied to fill the south Charlotte seat. By state law, they have to live in the district, and be a Republican - the same party as Bokhari.
Four people spoke Thursday, including Andy Dulin. He represented District 6 for eight years on council, through 2013.
"When I was on City Council before, the only number on my business card was my cell phone number. I cut out the middleman and people if they had my number, they could call me and I would get started on it," he said.
Another former council member interested in the job is Edwin Peacock, who lost a bid for mayor in 2013. His father was also a council member in the 1980s.
"And part of the reason I got infected with the service bug was my father and the example he set for me," he said.
Bokhari’s wife, Krista Bokhari, also applied, and won the endorsement of the Mecklenburg GOP, though she didn’t speak at Thursday’s forum. Council members will make their pick Monday.
