A Facebook post by the Mint Hill Police Department that jokingly warned the public of "untrustworthy drug dealers" has gone viral, with news mentions in cities from California to Great Britain.
The department wrote the tongue-in-cheek post Monday, warning that some drug dealers have duped customers by "weighing" drugs on a cell phone instead of a "certified scale."
“Please do not become a victim of this scam," the post said. "We can assist you by weighing your purchase to ensure that you didn’t get cheated out of what you paid for.”
Mint Hill Chief of Police Tim Ledford said the post has garnered international news coverage from Los Angeles to Great Britain -- but it was just a joke.
“We wanted folks in the community to understand their police officers are human beings also," Ledford said. "So we decided on putting a little bit of humor out there to see what the response would be.
"The response has been overwhelming.”
As of Friday morning, the post had about 5,000 shares and 700,000 views.
Ledford said the department isn’t worried about an influx of people looking to get their drugs weighed. But for those who are interested, they are certainly welcome.
