Prosecutors said Monday that Rayquan Borum was actually aiming at police when he shot and killed 26-year-old Justin Carr.
The Charlotte Observer reports that prosecutors made the accusation while addressing potential jurors in Borum's trial. Borum faces first-degree murder for Carr’s death, which occurred outside the Omni Hotel in uptown Charlotte during protests of the police killing of Keith Lamont Scott in September 2016.
Borum confessed to the shooting during police interrogation but said he wasn’t aiming at anyone in particular — that he was shooting in the air to disperse a crowd.

But prosecutors say the bullet that struck Carr was aimed at police officers who had been standing outside the hotel during the protests.
Jury selection continues this week in Borum’s trial, which presiding Superior Court Judge Greg Hayes says could last for as long as three or four weeks.
