In Mecklenburg County, there's one more primary before the Nov. 5 general election. Matthews has a mayoral primary on Oct. 8.
"I've been here 21 years, and this is the first time I've had a Matthews primary," said Mecklenburg County Elections Director Michael Dickerson.
There are three candidates on the ballot in the nonpartisan race. The top two vote getters will be on the general election ballot four weeks later.
"We have to be quick," Dickerson said. "We have to be ready to go. We've got everything else ready to go for the November election. As soon as we get the results, we can turn around and finish up Matthews and get those right out to everybody."
There was a partisan primary in September for Charlotte City Council and other races in the area. Dickerson says Matthews runs on a different schedule but until this year there haven't been enough candidates to trigger a primary.
Incumbent Mayor Paul Bailey is being challenged by town commissioner John Higdon and political newcomer Jason Majewski. Early voting ends Oct. 4.
