  • Join author Elizabeth Engelhardt for a conversation and book signing for her work Boardinghouse Women: How Southern Keepers, Cooks, Nurses, Widows, and Runaways Shaped Modern America, which highlights fascinating and important facets of women’s history in the United States.

From the eighteenth century well into the twentieth, entrepreneurial women ran boardinghouses throughout the South. Owned and operated by Black, Jewish, Native American, and white women, rich and poor, immigrant and native-born, these lodgings were often hubs of business innovation and engines of financial independence for their owners.

Boardinghouse Women draws on a vast archive to recover boardinghouse women’s stories, revealing what happened in the kitchens, bedrooms, hallways, back stairs, and front porches as well as behind closed doors—legacies still with us today.
Copies of Boardinghouse Women will be available to purchase onsite at the event, while supplies last.

A book signing will begin immediately following the conversation.

  • One of Dr. Christopher Moore’s (University of South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology) major interests as an archaeologist has been to understand how the earliest Paleoamericans lived and interacted with megafauna species. Just how implicated should humans be in the extinction of these ice age animals? In a new study, Moore and his colleagues used a forensic technique more commonly used to identify blood on objects at crime scenes to investigate this question.

  • The UNC Charlotte Jazz Ensemble comes uptown to present a night of swinging Sinatra tunes with guest vocalist John Love. From classy to sassy, songs like “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Nice N Easy,” “My Way,” and “The Lady is a Tramp” will bring cabaret flair to the Booth Playhouse.

A lifelong admirer and student of all things Sinatra, John Love has been performing Frank’s tunes since age ten in 1970. As a Sinatraphile he intends to honor, not impersonate “Ol’ Blue Eyes.” While he sings with undeniable voice and manner similarities, remember there is only one Frank! Performing with great bands and arrangements, Mr. Love has raised considerable contributions for various charities and community causes in North Carolina. Mr. Love performs frequently with The Doug Burns Big Band, a Charlotte based 20-piece band. Their most recent collaborative recording, Love Trumps Hate, is available on all streaming services. With each new generation, one thing remains the same: it’s easy to fall in love with this music!

  • Join Nation Ford Land Trust for this limited-access visit to an historic slave cemetery as we learn about and honor those who are buried there.

In 2022, a single grave site was discovered on private property in York County. With the help of archaeologists, property owners Andrew and Mary Lazenby discovered 144 gravesites believed to be those of enslaved Africans. The cemetery property, protected by a conservation easement with Nation Ford Land Trust, will never be developed. We have a rare opportunity to honor and share the story of these lost ancestors. Join us again this year as we continue to honor and share the story of these lost ancestors.

Our program will explore the funerary traditions of enslaved Africans and we will honor the 144 Lost Ancestors. This program will also include an opportunity to speak to the landowners and others who are a part of this fascinating project.

  • Summer is fast approaching, and we are busy prepping the herbs and spices we will need to start preserving summer's bounty. We have collected the needed spices to make our favorite kitchen pepper which will be used to season many a receipt. A longtime favorite of the cooks at Polk birthplace is making Crowdie Cheese with herbs and spices we collect from the garden served on a piece of toast. Receipts may have been simpler during the 18th century, but herbs and spices were often used when possible or available. Let's not forget the vegetables that are being harvested from the garden! A medley of cucumber, onion and squash cooked in butter will finish out the menu. We will be glad to share our secrets but no the food.
