  • Summer is fast approaching, and we are busy prepping the herbs and spices we will need to start preserving summer's bounty. We have collected the needed spices to make our favorite kitchen pepper which will be used to season many a receipt. A longtime favorite of the cooks at Polk birthplace is making Crowdie Cheese with herbs and spices we collect from the garden served on a piece of toast. Receipts may have been simpler during the 18th century, but herbs and spices were often used when possible or available. Let's not forget the vegetables that are being harvested from the garden! A medley of cucumber, onion and squash cooked in butter will finish out the menu. We will be glad to share our secrets but no the food.

  • Join New York Times bestselling author Bakari Sellers and Levine Museum of the New South for a conversation and signing for his new work The Moment: Thoughts on the Race Reckoning That Wasn't and How We Can All Move Forward Now.

“Drawing on memoir and interviews, Sellers explains the myriad ways that structural racism and “whitelash”, such as race-motivated shootings, harm Black Americans today.”—The New York Times.

In his new book, Sellers examines the modern political landscape and explores the forces at work to undermine civil rights gains over the past fifty years and offers solutions for a better tomorrow.

In his own words, Sellers wrote this book because “we have to find ways in which we can empower the African American community so that we can be a part of creating a democracy in its truest form and creating a world where my children not only can live in a better America for African Americans and other disfranchised people but also will be equipped to help develop a world where human existence is equitable—forever.”

Join us for a one-night-only event as Bakari Sellers explores inequities in healthcare, education, early childhood education, and policing and examines national politics and policies that deeply impact the lives of millions of African Americans in communities nationwide.

A book signing will begin immediately following the conversation.

Copies of The Moment will be available to purchase onsite at the event or with your ticket in advance.

  • “Identifying South Island John Doe, and the Archaeology of a Gullah Geechee Fishing Village: An Osteobiography”
Jodi A. Barnes, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources

In 2017, the storm surge and high tides from Hurricane Irma uncovered a human skeleton near a Gullah Geechee Fishing Village site in Georgetown County, South Carolina. Dr. Barnes will provide an overview of the efforts to identify South Island John Doe and excavate the late 19th to early 20th century village where he was found. Her research prioritizes community involvement and incorporates archival documents and material culture with skeletal analysis, genetic genealogy, and stable isotope analysis to create an osteobiography, or life history, of South Island John Doe. The project brings fishing into research on the archaeology of the African diaspora, while working to tell South Island John Doe’s story and hopefully say his name.
