  • "Aggression and Sufferings: Settler Violence, Native Resistance, and the Coalescence of the Old South"
Dr. F. Evan Nooe, USC Lancaster Assistant Professor of History

    F. Evan Nooe’s "Aggression & Sufferings: Settler Violence, Native Resistance, and the Coalescence of the Old South" offers a bold reconceptualization of how the violence of settler expansion and Native American resistance remade the American South. Flipping the anthropological model of coalescence onto white Southerners reveals the development of a distinct regional identity forged through southern concepts of honor, Native defiance to forced removal, and the memorialization of settler victimhood.

Presented in person and virtually. To attend via Zoom, register via this link: https://bit.ly/3QWoQRJ

  • Imagining the Indian details the current uprising against the misappropriation of Native culture in a national reckoning about racial injustice that has succeeded in the removal of Confederate imagery, toppling statues of Christopher Columbus and forcing corporate sponsors of Washington’s NFL team to demand it change its most-offensive name. It examines the origin and proliferation of the words, images, and gestures that many Native people and their allies find offensive. Imagining the Indian explores the impact that stereotyping and marginalization of Native history have had on Native people. It chronicles the long social movement to eliminate mascoting.

  • Join The Independent Picture House and Sugar Creek Library on Tuesday, June 11 from 5:45pm to 8pm at the library for a screening of the award winning documentary 'A Decent Home' (2022).

'A Decent Home' is a documentary about manufactured homes in America. Focused on how these last vestiges of affordable housing are facing trials as rich landowners raise rent and evict them from the land they rent, but do not own. This is a topic the Charlotte community, as well as other cities throughout the county, faces every day.
Indie on Wheels will include a screening of the documentary followed by an audience discussion with YWCA Central Carolinas' Rebecca Stickel, LCSW and Pivot Point Transitional Housing's Barry Shipp. As Director of Housing, Rebecca oversees the Women In Transition program and Families Together program. YWCA's housing programs provide safe, affordable housing and intensive support services for families and women facing homelessness in Charlotte. This is a free community event. Barry Shipp is the Founder and CEO of Pivot Point Transitional Housing, a Charlotte-based nonprofit that builds safe, supportive, dignified places as a “pivot point” for achieving more productive, satisfying, and self-directed lives.

Indie on Wheels is sponsored by Culture Blocks— a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County.
