About the Historic Elmwood Pinewood, Inc (HEPI): HEPI is a 501(3) non-profit dedicated to preserving, restoring, enhancing, and sharing the original historic and park-like atmosphere of Elmwood Pinewood, and Settler’s Cemeteries.

Before there was a Department of Parks and Recreation, cemeteries were purposely designed for dual-use. Easter and Halloween parades were conducted in Elmwood. Families had picnics and children played in the green space. We at HEPI believe that we, in concert with the City, can provide a safe, friendly, and serene environment for those interred, those visiting loved ones, and those wanting to learn about our past or just take a break from the hubbub.

  • Join author Elizabeth Engelhardt for a conversation and book signing for her work Boardinghouse Women: How Southern Keepers, Cooks, Nurses, Widows, and Runaways Shaped Modern America, which highlights fascinating and important facets of women’s history in the United States.

From the eighteenth century well into the twentieth, entrepreneurial women ran boardinghouses throughout the South. Owned and operated by Black, Jewish, Native American, and white women, rich and poor, immigrant and native-born, these lodgings were often hubs of business innovation and engines of financial independence for their owners.

Boardinghouse Women draws on a vast archive to recover boardinghouse women’s stories, revealing what happened in the kitchens, bedrooms, hallways, back stairs, and front porches as well as behind closed doors—legacies still with us today.
Copies of Boardinghouse Women will be available to purchase onsite at the event, while supplies last.

A book signing will begin immediately following the conversation.

  • One of Dr. Christopher Moore’s (University of South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology) major interests as an archaeologist has been to understand how the earliest Paleoamericans lived and interacted with megafauna species. Just how implicated should humans be in the extinction of these ice age animals? In a new study, Moore and his colleagues used a forensic technique more commonly used to identify blood on objects at crime scenes to investigate this question.
