  • Tony Trischka honors the music of Earl Scruggs, pioneer of the three-finger banjo style and one of the most important musicians in bluegrass. Trischka recently came into possession of extremely rare recordings of jam sessions with Scruggs and John Hartford, and he’ll be debuting Scruggs’s note-for-note solos from a few of these. Together with his ace band—Michael Daves on vocals and guitar, bassist Jared Engel, fiddler Brittany Haas and sometimes Maddie Witler on mandolin — they will trace the story of Scruggs from his childhood to his final years.

  • Join us for the second in a special series of concerts celebrating North Carolina’s unique story of moonshine and motorsports featuring NC legend of Americana, Jim Lauderdale, and the iconic bluegrass trio, the Kruger Brothers. The second of a three-part series, this concert will be held on September 21 at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte with the final performance at the Museum of the Albemarle on March 29 in Elizabeth City. Tickets are required for each performance.

    Inspired by the Moonshine and Motorsports Trail developed by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR), this series will blend music with storytelling as it moves from Raleigh to Charlotte to Elizabeth City over the next six months, highlighting the historic places on that very trail.
  • Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts will present its 6th Annual Haunted Trail, a spooky outdoor experience, October 25-27, 2024 behind the Matthews Community Center. This beloved community event is the largest fundraiser of the year for Matthews Playhouse, a nonprofit organization. Event organizers are promising new effects and even more chilling scenes for thrill-seekers.

    In addition to the main trail, which is not for the faint of heart, a milder "Not So Spooky" version will be available for children ages 6 and up. Families can also enjoy a Halloween Fun Zone, which offers activities such as Trunk or Treat, face painting, crafts, a dance party, and more. Local food trucks will be available each evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a variety of food for purchase. Limited edition Haunted Trail and Matthews Playhouse merchandise and $1 Raffle Basket entry tickets will be available for purchase during the event.


    The nightly schedule of Haunted Trail festivities for October 25-27, 2024, is as follows:


    "Not So Spooky" Trail – 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
    Designed for children ages 6 and up, this kid-friendly version of the Haunted Trail offers a gentler experience. Admission is $10 per person and includes access to the Matthews Playhouse Halloween Fun Zone.


    Halloween Fun Zone – 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
    Families are encouraged to come in costume and enjoy a Trunk-or-Treat, crafts, face painting, and more. Admission is $5 per child (ages 2-12) for the Fun Zone only, and does not include entry to the trail.


    "Full Fright" Trail – 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
    For those seeking a more intense experience, the trail transforms into the "Full Fright" version in the evening. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and parents are advised to use discretion when bringing younger children. Admission is $10 per person.
