This holiday season, Matthews Playhouse invites families and friends to come together and experience a heartwarming tale filled with uplifting musical numbers, beautiful period costumes, and show-stopping choreography. With a blend of fresh new faces and exciting twists, including new special effects and music, this year’s production promises a joyous and high-energy holiday experience.

Set in 19th-century London, "Scrooge! The Musical" brings the classic holiday tale to life with Leslie Bricusse’s award-winning score. Geof Knight stars as Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly man visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley (Jeff Powell), and the three spirits of Christmas (played by Sarah Baumgardner, Tristan Nogueira, and Davis Hickson). Through their visions, Scrooge sees the hardships faced by his clerk Bob Cratchit (Jared Shank), Mrs. Cratchit (Lauren Wilson), and their frail son Tiny Tim (alternated by Tobey Fincher and Charlotte Thomson). Inspired, Scrooge finds redemption, embracing the joy and spirit of Christmas.

A Director’s Fresh Perspective
Making his directorial debut, Johnny Hohenstein is eager to bring a fresh perspective to this year’s production. “Although we’re telling a well-known story, we hope to create a high-energy and fun environment for cast, crew, and audiences alike,” says Hohenstein. “Expect some surprises this year that will keep this beloved tradition fresh and alive!”

A Bittersweet Farewell
Local radio personality and actor Geof Knight will reprise his role as Ebenezer Scrooge for the third and final time. Knight, a beloved figure in the Charlotte theatre community, has announced his retirement from the stage after this production. “I am very honored to be spending a third year as part of this holiday tradition,” Knight says. “This will be my last year, and more than likely, my last time on stage in Charlotte. I look forward to another journey to 1843 London with both new friends and old.”

Special Performances and Community Impact
In addition to the eight regular performances, Scrooge! The Musical will feature a "Pay What You Can" performance on Thursday, December 19th, at 7:30 pm, benefiting Common Heart, a local non-profit dedicated to eradicating food insecurity and eliminating generational poverty in the community.

Introducing Kids Night Out - A New Way to Experience Live Theatre
For children who may not yet appreciate live theatre, Matthews Playhouse is excited to announce its newest program, Kids Night Out—a fun-filled evening for children in grades 1-5, offered during the Friday and Saturday evening performances of Scrooge! The Musical. While parents enjoy a night out, kids will have a blast with themed activities, games, dinner, and a cozy PJ party from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.

New York Times bestselling author Therese Anne Fowler will speak at the Mint Museum on Randolph (2730 Randolph Road, Charlotte, NC 28207) at 6:00 p.m. The event is part of a year-long centennial celebration by the Charlotte Writers Club which was founded in 1922.

Best known as the author of Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald (2013), Fowler is the author of six novels including two more bestsellers, A Well-Behaved Woman (2018) and A Good Neighborhood (2020). After reading Z, Christina Ricci was so taken with the story that she convinced Amazon Studios to adapt the book for television. Ricci starred in the ten-part miniseries – Z: The Beginning of Everything – which appeared in 2015.

At the Mint on Randolph, Therese Fowler will speak about her most recent book, It All Comes Down to This, in conversation with Sarah Archer (author of The Plus One).

Perhaps no other music genre tells us more about love in all its varied shades than jazz. From its openly sentimental ballads and teary torch songs to its fiery declarations of new love and playful odes to significant others, jazz numbers hit all the marks. This month, the Ziad Jazz Quartet – with guest vocalist Toni Tupponce – evoke the many moods of love for Valentine’s Day with a playlist of jazzy love songs including “Better Than Anything” by Al Jarreau, “I Turn To You” by Kirk Whalum, and “On The Sunny Side Of The Street” by Nat “King” Cole. Toni Tupponce will be accompanied by Ziad Rabie (saxophone), Noel Freidline (piano), Al Sergel (drums), and Ron Brendle (bass). Join us for a casual walk or bike ride (your choice!) as we explore one of Mecklenburg County’s newest greenways! This free event is co-hosted by Sustain Charlotte, Partners for Parks, and the Carolina Thread Trail. You’ll have an opportunity to speak with staff and volunteers from these organizations as we discuss the importance of growing our network of greenways. We’ll begin with a short discussion outdoors, and will then continue with a guided walk and bike ride. This is a family-friendly event that is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Saturday, January 22, 2022 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Starting & ending location: President James K. Polk Historic Site, 12031 Lancaster Hwy, Pineville, NC 28134. Look for the Sustain Charlotte tent when you arrive! All participants will be required to sign a waiver upon arrival. We will follow CDC and local health guidance including social distancing, and we ask that you not attend if you are experiencing any covid symptoms or would otherwise put other attendees at risk. Route: When you register, please indicate if you plan to walk or bike. The route is approximately 1.8 miles each way, for a total of 3.6 miles. We will stop multiple times along the route to talk about the greenway. You are welcome to walk or bike less than this distance, or to add additional miles at the end of our time together. Continue the discussion with us after the main event at Waldhorn Restaurant (12101 Lancaster Hwy, Pineville). There is no outdoor seating available, but the bar area will be open. This is not an “official” part of the event and we ask each participant to consider their own level of comfort with gathering indoors. Charlotte, NC – It was announced this week that the UNC‐Charlotte 49ers Ice Hockey Club will host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the 2022 Outdoor Classic hosted at Truist Field, Home of the Charlotte Knights. The game will take place on Saturday, November 19th at 7:00pm. This game is also a part of the Light the Knights Festival presented by Truist.

“We are thrilled for the opportunity to play at Truist Field,” said Charlotte 49ers Ice Hockey Club Head Coach, Tobin Trautz. “It is a unique event that the team is incredibly enthusiastic for as a chance to highlight not only hockey in Charlotte, but also the talented student‐athletes on our team. We hope this event will be an opportunity to help grow the sport of hockey in Charlotte to current and future fans.”

The 49ers Ice Hockey Club team is part of the University Recreation Department. The team is partially funded thru the Student Activity Fee Commission, with the remainder of costs player‐funded through dues, sponsorships, and donations. It is also entirely student‐run and features several Alumni on their staff. They are currently 2nd in their Regional Division – and 6th overall in League play. The team is a member of the ACCHL Division II (Atlantic Coast Conference Hockey League) which includes schools such as NC State, Duke, Elon, Wake Forest, and UNC‐CH.
