North Carolina regulators have approved a rate increase for Duke Energy customers in the central part of the state, including Charlotte — but it's less than the company asked for. Wednesday's order by the North Carolina Utilities Commission also trims what Duke had hoped to charge customers for the cost of cleaning up coal ash.

Asheville City Council voted Tuesday evening to remove the Vance Monument from its spot in the city's main public space. The monument is named for Zebulon Vance, a North Carolina governor and U.S. senator. Vance and his family enslaved people prior to the war, and he fought vehemently against full civil rights for Black Americans after it.

Say goodbye to Charlotte's Main Library at 'One for the Books'
During the first two weekends of November, Charlotte can say goodbye to the Main Library in uptown. The building closed last week and will be demolished in early 2022 to make way for a new $100 million project at the same site.
Madison Cawthorn announces he'll run for reelection in a new district that includes part of Mecklenburg
Cawthorn, a first-term Republican representative, said in a video posted to Twitter that he will run for reelection in North Carolina's newly redrawn 13th Congressional District. That district runs from Western North Carolina to include a part of western Mecklenburg County.
North Carolina budget gets final OK, quickly signed by Cooper
A final North Carolina budget bill is now law after Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper signed it almost as soon as the legislature placed it on his desk. The General Assembly gave its final approval on Thursday to a two-year state spending plan with a vote in the House.
