  • People tend to think about age differences, like gender and racial differences, as biologically driven. Through a series of captivating stories about life in the Marshall Islands, Elise Berman shows that in many ways children are not born different, but learn to be different. Each story in the book examines a central mystery: Who gets to adopt the baby? Will Roka keep his lollipop? Who is telling the truth? Through these dramas, large and small, Berman immerses readers of “Talking Like Children: Language and the Production of Age in the Marshall Islands” into everyday life in a small village on an atoll in the Pacific Ocean. As the mysteries unfold, Berman also shows how age differences emerge through the decisions people make, the emotions they feel, the things that they say, and the power they gain. Berman shows how children learn to talk like children, as people who are different from adults. Berman will discuss her research at the Personally Speaking talk at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26, virtually. Please note the changes in venue and program times. Register at clas.charlotte.edu/PS and a Zoom link will be sent shortly before the event. Berman is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology and first visited the Marshall Islands in 2003, working as an English and math teacher. She has returned repeatedly since then, and is now working on a project with Marshallese communities in the U.S. She also is studying migration to the New South and linguistic inequality in schools and has recently published on this topic. Her research focuses generally on the politics of language and exchange, socialization, and racialization, with an examination of children’s cultures, language, lying, socialization, and age. She has worked with and studied ultra-Orthodox Jews, K’iche’ Maya, and Marshall Islanders. The 2021-2022 Personally Speaking Series The last two talks in the 2021-2022 Personally Speaking published experts series will be held at The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City. In those spring 2022 talks, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences researchers will engage audiences in conversations about racial identity in Argentina and geology’s impact in the Civil War. These are planned as hybrid in-person/virtual events, assuming that COVID-19 restrictions will allow the face-to-face event. The presentations will be recorded. “Hiding in Plain Sight: Black Women, the Law, and the Making of a White Argentine Republic,” Erika Edwards. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022 “Rocks and Rifles: The Influence of Geology on Combat and Tactics during the American Civil War,” Scott Hippensteel. Tuesday, March 29, 2022

  • Caroline Calouche & Co. is thrilled to be back with their annual holiday treat, Clara’s Trip: A Cirque & Dance Nutcracker Story at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center’s Booth Playhouse. Clara’s Trip is a contemporary twist on a holiday classic. Artistic Director Caroline Calouche performed the ballet many times in her childhood and dreamed of inventing her version. For the past nine years, her adaptation has brought joy to audiences of all ages. Filled with athletic and high-energy dancing on the ground and in the air, the unique take on the classic story is the perfect holiday treat for your friends and family. Calouche’s story begins with Clara, a beautiful young and single woman, attending a holiday party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Flowers. At the party, she meets Beau, who quickly sweeps her off her feet. Clara is a passionate dancer but not the most coordinated. She trips, falls and is whisked off to the hospital to learn that her ankle is broken. Her friends cheer her up with some gifts that come to life in her dreams. This year, the lead role of Clara will be performed by one of the Charlotte Cirque & Dance Center’s senior students, Zoe Flowers. “She has performed in all nine Clara’s Trips and I could not be more proud of the artist she is becoming,” says Caroline Calouche. Avi Wolf Borouchoff from Philadelphia first performed with CC&Co. in their 2021 Summer Season shows and is back to perform the role of Beau. Two new artists, Abbie Rooney (Kansas City) and Joel Herzfeld (Boston) will perform the lead roles of Mr. and Mrs. Flowers. Expect an incredible, and high-flying, grande pas de deux in Act 2 from those two!

  • In preparation for the November JAZZ ROOM performance, we get to know Grammy-nominated pianist John Chin and his approach to jazz. “When you think of a jazz musician, what do you see? I can most certainly guess that it’s not me,” notes John Chin in a June article in the JazzTimes. With the history of inclusion in jazz, John will speak to us about how this relates to his experience as an Asian American. John Chin’s Trio will be sharing the music of McCoy Tyner, whose sophisticated chords and dramatic rhythms shaped modern jazz piano. We will speak to John about that style and how it has informed his own music. Tune in to the monthly Conversation with Curtis series to discover outstanding musicians, past and present, regional and international. Our interactive events are a chance for you to engage with the artists who are usually up on the stage. These conversations are led by jazz expert, JAZZ ROOM MC, and CurtJazz radio host Curtis Davenport. Join us FREE on YouTube or Facebook at the downbeat of the show. • A sought-after musician on the New York jazz scene, pianist John Chin returns to the JAZZ ROOM to share a modern interpretation of the music of one of jazz’s most iconic figures, the great McCoy Tyner. NEA Jazz Master McCoy Tyner is one of the most influential pianists in jazz history. The John Chin Trio will bring the JAZZ ROOM snapshots of Tyner’s 50 year career. Featuring: John Chin on piano Joe Martin on bass Rudy Royston on drums The JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. McCoy Tyner: Alfred McCoy Tyner was an American jazz pianist known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet and a long solo career. He was a NEA Jazz Master and a five-time Grammy winner. Not a player of electric keyboards and synthesizers, he was committed to acoustic instrumentation. Tyner, who was widely imitated, was one of the most recognizable and influential pianists in jazz history. John Chin: Back in the JAZZ ROOM by popular demand, John Chin has been a fixture on the New York Jazz Scene since 1998. Trained at Julliard, mentored by Kenny Barron, John has performed internationally as a leader and sideman, at many major festivals, as well as some of America's most important and storied jazz rooms. He has shared the stage with Ron Carter, Benny Golson, James Brown, Mark Turner, Dayna Stephens, Joel Frahm, John Ellis, Chris Cheek, and Ari Hoenig, among many others.
