  • A sought-after musician on the New York jazz scene, pianist John Chin returns to the JAZZ ROOM to share a modern interpretation of the music of one of jazz’s most iconic figures, the great McCoy Tyner. NEA Jazz Master McCoy Tyner is one of the most influential pianists in jazz history. The John Chin Trio will bring the JAZZ ROOM snapshots of Tyner’s 50 year career. Featuring: John Chin on piano Joe Martin on bass Rudy Royston on drums The JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. McCoy Tyner: Alfred McCoy Tyner was an American jazz pianist known for his work with the John Coltrane Quartet and a long solo career. He was a NEA Jazz Master and a five-time Grammy winner. Not a player of electric keyboards and synthesizers, he was committed to acoustic instrumentation. Tyner, who was widely imitated, was one of the most recognizable and influential pianists in jazz history. John Chin: Back in the JAZZ ROOM by popular demand, John Chin has been a fixture on the New York Jazz Scene since 1998. Trained at Julliard, mentored by Kenny Barron, John has performed internationally as a leader and sideman, at many major festivals, as well as some of America's most important and storied jazz rooms. He has shared the stage with Ron Carter, Benny Golson, James Brown, Mark Turner, Dayna Stephens, Joel Frahm, John Ellis, Chris Cheek, and Ari Hoenig, among many others.   • “Coping with Cancer” for Patients, Survivors, and Loved Ones Cancer is one of the most devastating diseases of our time. Almost every person in our society knows or loves someone affected by cancer, or knows what it means to battle cancer personally. If you are or a loved one is a cancer patient, cancer survivor, or caregiver, please join us October 11, 2020 at 1:30PM for a Zoom presentation called “Coping with Cancer”. Presenters will share about coping skills and resources available to all affected. Jacob Wiltshire, MSW, LCSWA of the Levine Cancer Institute and Lori Hubbard, a cancer survivor, will be leading the discussion. There is no cost for this event. The presentation will be a time of sharing information, support, and resources for cancer patients, cancer survivors, caregivers, and loved ones. Jacob Wiltshire is a clinical social worker with the Levine Cancer Institute. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Masters in Social Work from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Lori Hubbard is a Kindergarten Teacher at an independent school in the Charlotte area. She received a diagnosis of Stage 3B malignant melanoma in November 2015. After battling cancer with the guidance of doctors in Atlanta, she has now had no evidence of disease for four years.
