  • Charlotte-area community members are invited to attend a free community-wide event, aimed at increasing sleep health education. The family-oriented, fun afternoon will feature on-site sleep center screenings, read-aloud bedtime stories, bouncing inflatables, face painters, two instructed yoga sessions and other interactive events. Prior to the free event, there will be a 5K run/walk, where pajama-clad runners will hit the streets of Charlotte to raise awareness about healthy sleep. Proceeds from the run will benefit the AASM Foundation and Sleep Research Society Foundation to support key research that positively impacts the lives of patients with sleep disorders and the field of sleep medicine.
  • Join We Rock CLT as campers play their original songs! Throughout the week, Kid campers aged 8-12 have learned how to play an instrument, form a band and write their own original songs!

    Our summer camp curriculum teaches these diverse individuals to learn, create, and collaborate through musical exploration. We provide lessons, workshops, and activities that build allyship and empower campers to find their voice. By uniting musical education with social justice programs, We Rock Charlotte teaches campers to stand up for themselves and each other as artists, activists, and allies.

    Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room Celebrates Summer Reading

    Join Judy Goldman, Charlotte author of seven books, as her daughter, Laurie Smithwick, a Charlotte artist, interviews her about her new memoir, CHILD — a personal meditation on love in the shadow of white privilege and racism. CHILD tells the story of Judy’s relationship with the Black woman who worked for her family, “lived in,” and helped raise her. It’s also the story of the child who was left behind to be raised by someone else. Judy and Laurie will examine what it meant to grow up in Rock Hill, S.C., in the 1940s and ‘50s.

    This program will be hosted in person at SouthPark Regional Library.

  • Introducing Charlotte’s newest Latin jazz sensation, JazzArts Nuestro Tiempo Youth Ensemble.
    This new ensemble of student musicians has spent the past 12 weeks delving into the unique rhythms, instruments, and patterns of Latin jazz, and is ready to present to you a variety of traditional Latin and Cuban jazz tunes that will keep you dancing.
    They are excited to share with you the culmination of their work and fun.
    This performance kicks off Havana Night at the Boileryard, a full evening celebrating Cuban culture. Beginning at 5:00, you’re invited to eat, drink, dance and celebrate Cuba’s rich culture, featuring live music by North Carolina’s finest salsa band Orquesta Mayor, Cuban five-piece band Son Poquitos, DJ Nick Martin, also delicious Cuban cuisine, mojitos station and a lot of sabor!   • Local author, Landis Wade kicks off a new mystery series that are set in Charlotte with his first novel, Deadly Declaration. Set in modern Charlotte, a trio of retirees join forces to solve the mystery of a fellow resident and the disappearance of his manuscript about the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, the city's controversial claim to fame as being the precursor to the American Declaration of Independence.

  • Dorothy Gilliam is the former president of the National Association of Black Journalists, where she served from 1993-95. She also is a former fellow of the Freedom Forum at the Media Studies Center at Columbia University as well as at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Gilliam is most well-known as the first Black reporter at the Washington Post, where she started working in 1961. After leaving the newspaper later that decade to spend time with her family, she returned to the Post in 1972, ultimately working there for more than 30 years and eventually starting a column that focused on issues involving education, politics and race.

    In recent years, Gilliam has been honored for her life’s work, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Post in 2010 and the Foremother Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Center for Health Research in 2019, which goes to “women who expanded women’s horizons, improved our communities and made remarkable contributions to our country,” according to a NCHR release. Gilliam also wrote a memoir, “Trailblazer: A Pioneering Journalist's Fight to Make the Media Look More Like America,” which was published in January 2019.
