  • For one night only in the heart of Charlotte NC, join Micheal Gungor for a moment of shared life and energy through the power of music and presence.

Multi-grammy nominated musical artist Michael Gungor is best known for creating inclusive and eclectic spiritual music. “I don’t think we all need to believe in the same things,” he has said. “It’s possible to see all of life as sacred.” This sort of pluralism shows up in Gungor’s musical stylings almost as much as in his philosophy. From synthesizers and drum machines to french horns and classical guitar; from singable, post-rock anthems to identity-deconstructing mantras whispered in odd time signatures—this “Psychedelic Gospel” artist loves to experiment with any and all of the tools at his disposal to accomplish his mission of creating music that helps open the heart to the fullness and beauty of life.

    By Robert O’Hara
    Directed by Donna Bradby
    July 15 – 31, 2022
Barbecue centers around the O’Mallerys, a dysfunctional group of siblings who come together for a park barbeque in order to stage an emergency intervention for their sister Barbara, whose drug habit has gotten out of hand. However, there are in fact two O’Mallery families, one white and one black. Each appear in different, yet hilariously similar, scenes that juxtapose to create a provocative dialogue about racial and family politics.

  • The Abbey Players are very pleased to present the premiere production of a new play: Dr. Rocket’s Last Night on Earth or THE TRIAL OF WERNHER VON BRAUN by Charlotte playwrights Albert Dulin and Arthur “Duke” Ernsberger. The play is a dream with music, both a surreal look at the German scientist who was instrumental in the development of the Apollo moon program for NASA and a harrowing examination of his work prior to his reinvention after World War II.

Von Braun oversaw the development of the V2 rocket for Nazi Germany, an unstoppable weapon that rained destruction and death upon London during the last year of World War II. The work on the rocket program was expedited by concentration camp prisoners. They worked under intolerable conditions, which caused the deaths of 20,000 through illness, starvation, hangings and beatings. Von Braun admitted he knew of their treatment, but was helpless to change it. At the end of the war Von Braun and his team of scientists and engineers were brought to the United States to work on the fledgling missile program. But after the launch of Sputnik by the USSR, his efforts shifted to the space race that resulted. Thanks in large part to his work, Apollo 11 landed on the Moon in 1969.

Dr. Rocket is narrated by Lola, a character based upon Marlene Dietrich. Von Braun hallucinates that he is on trial for his association with the Nazis; in reality he is dying of cancer. Each actor in the play plays several roles. Jim Eddings is Music Director. The play is being staged by Director of Abbey Theatre Simon Donoghue. He also portrays Von Braun.

Performances are June 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 8pm. Tickets are available at the door just prior to each show. The cost for off-campus patrons is $10. Reservations: 704-461-6786.

  • Tatiana Eva-Marie spends an hour speaking to us about the world of gypsy jazz from her perspective. She will share her knowledge of its history and the ways she feels the roots of this music are as important today as when it was created.
Gypsy jazz is a style of music begun in France in the 1920s, coming out of WWI, as a much-needed expression of joy and celebration. This JAZZ ROOM weekend of music and conversation pay tribute to one of the fathers of the music, Django Reinhardt.
“The gypsy jazz warbler” – New York Times describes rising jazz star Tatiana Eva-Marie.
Tatiana Eva-Marie’s singing is inspired by her own French and Gypsy heritage; a love for the Parisian art scene of the 1920s through the 60s; a fascination for New Orleans Jazz; and a deep connection to the Great American Songbook. In conjunction with this month’s JAZZ ROOM, Tatiana Eva-Marie Sings Django’s Caravan shares with Charlotte her life-long passion and study.
Through free panels, discussions, and workshops, JazzArts Charlotte is committed to bringing nationally acclaimed artists to Charlotte to enhance the experience of the music.
Join us in one-on-one conversation for a glimpse at the joyous world of gypsy jazz.
