On April 30, 2022, join us for a whole day of living history to learn about the lives of the enslaved in “Inalienable Rights: Living History Through the Eyes of the Enslaved.” Hear from first-person interpreters, watch blacksmith and masonry demonstrations, and learn about the people who were enslaved on the Polk farm. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children 5-12 and seniors 62+.

  • Alfonso Lopez, violin and Michele Tabor, piano return to Belmont Abbey for a concert of music from Europe and the Americas including the USA, Cuba, Peru, and Venezuela. Returning to our series for the fifth time the duo never fails to please. Selections range from classical to works that migrated to the popular music field. The January 24, 2022, concert will be held at 8:00 PM in the Abbey Basilica, Belmont, NC. There will be in-person attendance with masks required. The concert is free to the public.   • Lenoir NC artist Tyler Stephens, a/k/a “Sour Steve,” will present his hand cut collage art exhibition “All Riot on the Western Front” at the Caldwell Arts Council April 1-May 27, 2022. By combining vintage pre-war and post-war adverts of the 1930’s-1950’s with more modern imagery of our current political and social landscape, Sour Steve’s art challenges the viewer to confront the incongruities and political paradoxes of our modern society. The Caldwell Arts council is open Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm.

  • “Who’s the Real Ambassador?” So sang Louis Armstrong, in a performance of Dave Brubeck’s composition, The Real Ambassador (1961). Is it the political diplomat, sent overseas to ease political tensions? Or is it the cultural ambassador, sent overseas to perform and win the hearts of dignitaries and the public? This four week class focuses on jazz ambassadors, beginning with Cold War ambassadors Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, and Benny Goodman. Part of a series of virtual workshops taught by Dr. Kelsey Klotz, this month, during Jazz Appreciation Month, we explore what made a useful representative of American democracy. Dr. Kelsey Klotz is a lecturer in UNC Charlotte’s Department of Music. In 2016, with a PhD in musicology. As an educator, Dr. Klotz teaches critical listening as a method for musical analysis and encountering perspectives different from one’s own. Her approach to the confluence of music and history offers a deep dive into the focal topic, relating that to influences of and to the societal environment of the time, and implications to today.   • June 21-October 22, 2022 (Tuesday-Saturday) FREE ADMISSION The Kings Mountain Historical Museum is proud to announce a new exhibit coming this summer. The exhibit was created in conjunction with The Dover Library’s University Archives at Gardner Webb University and The Earl Scruggs Center. Bound by Faith: The Bibles of Cleveland County offers visitors a look at some of the Bibles that were owned by Cleveland County residents and some of the interesting ways in which they were used in the secular world of the 19th and 20th centuries. This exhibit features several Bibles which include The O. Max Gardner Inaugural Bible, The O.M. Mull Inaugural Bible, a 1648 Field Bible, and many others. In addition to this collection, we are pulling several Bibles, Hymnals, and other items from our own collections to add to the story.
