  • “Suicide Prevention and Survivor Recovery” Seminar at Light of Christ UMC in Ballantyne Suicide is a major public health concern. Suicide is among the leading causes of death in the United States, and based on recent mortality data, suicide in some populations is on the rise. Among young people aged 10-34 years old, suicide was the second leading cause of death in 2019. If you are or a loved one has suicidal ideations or has attempted or completed suicide, please join us Wednesday, May 18th at 7:00PM for a presentation called “Suicide Prevention and Survivor Recovery”. Presenter Jacob Wiltshire, MSW, LCSWA of the Department of Veterans Affairs Charlotte Health Care Center will be leading the discussion. There is no cost for this event. The presentation will be a time of sharing information, support, and resources for those whose lives have been impacted by mental illness and suicide. Teens and young adults may find this seminar particularly helpful, in order to be trained to help a friend who is struggling with mental health. He currently works for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Charlotte Health Care Center as a mental health therapist. He has previously worked at the Levine Cancer Institute providing mental health support for cancer patients and their families. He has also served at Carolinas Rehabilitation, helping people with brain injuries and cancers transition out of the hospital. He also has several years experience serving as a co-facilitator of a support group for people who have lost a loved one to suicide. Prior to becoming a social worker, Jacob was a professional fundraiser working with churches, community non-profits, and in higher education. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Masters in Social Work from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Patel earned her DMD degree from the University of Pennsylvania – School of Dental Medicine in 1995. She completed her General Practice Residency at Rutgers School of Biomedical and Health Sciences 1995-1997 (formerly known as UMDNJ-NJDS). She completed a fellowship in Dental Education for the Care of the Disabled at the University of Washington in 1997. She was a part-time faculty and staff dentist at Rutgers and at Jersey Shore Medical Center from 1997-2000. She also served as the Program Director of the General Practice Residency ang Hospital Dentistry programs from 2000 to 2007. Her clinical interests include dental management of the intellectually disabled, medically complex and oncological patients.

  • American composer Morten Lauridsen's moving, ethereal Lux Aeterna, a meditation on death and the promise of life beyond, as well as Bach’s funeral Cantata 106, will be performed by Queens choirs in the splendid Belk Chapel. This Arts At Queens concert is presented by the Department of Art, Design and Music. We regret to announce that the Bach Akademie Charlotte will not be joining us for this performance due to a family emergency.
