  • Saturday, April 29 join us as we welcome representatives from the Catawba Cultural Center to the President James K. Polk State Historic Site from, 10am-12pm.

    They will present Catawba History 101, an overview of 6,000 years of Catawba Nation's history, in our auditorium. Afterwards, a drum group will perform songs for dancers to demonstrate various styles of dance outside on our historic grounds.

  • Have you heard of ChatGPT? It seems to be popping up everywhere, from Canva's new Magic Write feature to the potential of a robot lawyer. This chatbot, launched by OpenAI in November 2022, is a natural language processing tool driven by AI technology that allows for human-like conversations and much more.

    Join us as we discuss the implications of ChatGPT in the tech space. We will explore areas of opportunity such as different UX design requirements for tech products and further development of voice recognition and natural language processing. However, we will also discuss potential dangers of this new AI, including the possibility of incorrect or biased information and cybersecurity attacks by divulging personal information through the chatbot.

    We will have a digital human, designed by Amplifi Labs join us for the conversation, to showcase the advancements and challenges of the chatbot technology. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the future of chatbots and AI, and how they are revolutionizing our lives.

  • Get ready to witness an unforgettable celebration of Black History, Excellence, the Fine Arts and Family-Friendly entertainment at "A NIGHT of ARTISTIC RENEWAL Vol III: History In Living Color," presented by distinguished spoken word artist and author Dionne D. Hunter.

    This highly anticipated event will showcase a talented line up of exceptional artists, including Emmy Award-winning spoken word artist Boris "Bluz" Rogers, Charlotte’s Poet Laureate Junious ‘Jay’ Ward, and marvellous spoken word artists Keith Allison and Linda Orji.

    But that's not all - the event will also feature electrifying choreography from Vision Elite Royalty Dance Studio and Jerry Dean aka “Ungraceful Jay," a breath-taking musical performance from the internationally renowned violinist Candice “Pretty Stringz” Smith, and the extraordinary vocal talents of Spencer “Suspence” Sims.

  • The High Country Jazz Festival brings first-rate jazz experiences to Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina. The 2023 headliners include the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra (June 9), the Emmet Cohen Trio (June 10), and Reggie Buie Group (June 11) performing at the Appalachian Theatre in Downtown Boone and Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock.   • The Independent Picture House's Community Impact Film Series sparks dialogue and builds bridges between people and organizations through the power of film. The Women’s Health event will be an energetic gathering that’ll kick off with a morning movement class and brunch bites, a screening of 9 award-winning short films, a conversation with filmmakers and women’s health community leaders, and finally a marketplace showcasing resources in our city, women-owned businesses and art.
  • Political cartoons have helped Charlotteans understand everything from World Wars to the World Cup. In the Charlotte Museum of History's newest exhibit, "Captured in Cartoons," visitors can explore cartoons from throughout Charlotte's history, see original drawings from Pulitzer Prize-winner Kevin Siers and experiment with making their own cartoons.

    This official opening event include a conversation with Kevin Siers, light refreshments, and a brief tour of the exhibit. This event is free for museum members and $5 for the general public.
  • Join author Pam Kelley and others in conversation about North Carolina Humanities's North Carolina Reads April book selection, "Money Rock: A Family’s Story of Cocaine, Race, and Ambition in the New South." The book tells the story of a striving African American family in Charlotte, swept up and transformed by the 1980s cocaine epidemic. The panel will discuss themes from the book including racism, segregation, the War on Drugs and mass incarceration.

    An hour-long, pre-event reception and book signing begins at 6:00 p.m.; light food and beverage will be served. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. and will end with an audience Q+A.
