Charlotte Talks: Examining Rock 'N' Roll's History Of Violence

FSG

Tuesday, March 5, 2019

The history of rock and roll is peppered with gun violence.  Local author and playwright Jeff Jackson uses that history to ask some important questions in his latest novel, "Destroy All Monsters: The Last Rock Novel."

Jeff Jackson is a local Charlotte author and musician whose new novel "Destroy All Monsters: The Last Rock Novel" explores music’s unfortunate association with violence— more specifically, gun violence.

The history of rock 'n' roll is littered with instances of gun violence, from early examples like Johnny Ace, who was killed on Christmas Eve in 1954, to ex-Beatle John Lennonmurdered in 1980, to Darrel Abbot who was gunned down on stage during a live performance in 2004.  Jackson’s book uses these examples to explore the reasons for this violence and why it doesn’t have to be that way.
