President Donald J. Trump's approval rating sits at 44 percent among residents in South Carolina, according to a new poll conducted by Winthrop University.

Trump's approval rating has hovered in the mid-40s in the state through his first two years in office. However, residents who lean Republican gave Trump an 83 percent approval rating.

"Trump's approval in South Carolina continues to be higher than his overall national approval ratings," Winthrop poll director and political scientist Scott Huffmon said in a statement. "[South Carolina] Republicans continue to offer their full-throated support of the president."

The poll also asked questions on current topics such as sexual harassment in the workplace, immigration and climate change. According to the poll, South Carolina residents say the most important problems facing our country are immigration, racism and politicians/government. As for issues facing the state, education, jobs and infrastructure were the most pressing issues among respondents.

Those who participated in the poll were asked if women who complain about sexual harassment cause more problems than they solve and nearly half strongly disagreed. Two-thirds strongly disagreed that sexual harassment in the workplace is not a problem in the United States. Almost three-fourths strongly or somewhat agreed that most women who come forward about sexual harassment are telling the truth. Almost 80 percent say that men who have not committed sexual harassment have to be extra careful in order to not be accused.

However, half of the respondents say they approve of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's nomination. Only slightly fewer say their opinion was very or somewhat favorable of him.

The residents gave Congress a 69 percent disapproval while the South Carolina General Assembly a 46 percent approval rating. The support for Governor Henry McMaster has risen to 51 percent after hovering in the 40s.

Three-fourths of residents said the country's economy is very good or fairly good and the same number think South Carolina's economy is performing the same.

Half polled said climate change is happening and say the cause is equally shared between human and nature. Twenty-eight percent of respondents said humans are the reason for climate change.
