A Brooklyn band led by a pair of guys who write ringtones for a living, Amazing Baby creates a formidable wall of sound, magnified by a dozen rock stars' worth of swagger. Picking up the mantle of Roxy Music and T. Rex, singer-keyboardist Will Roan and guitarist Simon O'Connor craft startlingly catchy, spacey glam-rock jams on their new album Rewild — and the song "Pump Yr Brakes" in particular.
Even the "Baby, oh oh oh oh oh oh" chorus sounds like part of a readymade soundtrack to a TV drama filled with teenagers who experience steamy summer nights. Guitars wail as Roan sighs, "This is a certain disposition / that I might have to take / Just follow through the room / I think my bed might break."
Amazing Baby's room-filling sound finds swirling, crunchy guitars coexisting with come-hither vocals that slither and snake around risqué lyrics, bolstered by a seductive rhythm section. "Pump Yr Brakes" reveals new layers with every listen, like an Everlasting Gobstopper made of innuendo, reverb and echo.
