With its distinctly rural feel, the New York band Woods makes an ideal soundtrack for balmy walks amidst mammoth trees and crunchy beds of dead leaves. In "Suffering Season," falsetto vocals reverberate for miles in every direction, quivering with tremolo alongside lazy guitar leads. The sound is haunting, but also disarmingly friendly.
Warm backup vocals and a mellow tempo make "Suffering Season" an upbeat standout from Woods' latest album, At Echo Lake. A sweet showcase for the group's earthy blend of tattered production and cavernous reverb, it displays an eeriness that's paired well with its easygoing vibe. Elsewhere on At Echo Lake, darkness clings to Woods' music, but "Suffering Season" provides a welcome moment of relief in its optimistic refrain, "Who knows what tomorrow might bring?" As loneliness provides room for a sense of peace, "Suffering Season" demonstrates that the sun can shine through even the thickest canopies.
