Alto saxophonist Steve Coleman comes up with some of the most original song structures in jazz. In many others' hands, they'd sound like algebra; with his virtuosity and arranging, it crackles with excitement. The latest incarnations of his Five Elements band execute with awe-inspiring precision, as heard on the new album The Mancy Of Sound. With wordless scat vocals and jaw-dropping drumming, the band performs at the Harbor stage at the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival.
