Folk Alley Presents: Pieta Brown

Pieta Brown says she didn't find the guitar; the guitar found her. The daughter of singer-songwriter Greg Brown grew up surrounded by music and wrote her first song when she was only 3. By age 8, she was writing poetry and instrumental music on the piano, eventually picking up the guitar in her early 20s and merging the two into songs.

She's come a long way since then, earning a reputation for poetic and well-crafted songs. Her most recent album, Paradise Outlaw, is her sixth; it was created in collaboration with artists including Amos Lee and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who also provided Brown use of his April Base recording studio in rural Wisconsin for the album.

Recently, Pieta Brown stopped by Folk Alley's studios at WKSU in Kent, Ohio, with Bo Ramsey. She says she considers "Letter In Hand" to be one of the centerpieces from Paradise Outlaw and describes it as a freedom song.
