Advocates push back against Mebane plans for Buc-ee's

Advocates are speaking out against North Carolina’s first Buc-ee’s. They say the new store in Mebane could create environmental and health concerns.

The gas station chain is building a 74,000-square-foot location on Trollingwood-Hawfields Road. Mebane’s Planning Board voted against the site plan in 2023, but it was later approved by the City Council. Rania Masri, co-director of the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network, said at a press conference that the incoming Buc-ee’s could create more traffic and pollution.

“We do not need more toxic infrastructure. We need clean water, breathable air, and communities where health and dignity are non-negotiable,” said Masri.

Advocates released a report highlighting their findings on air quality and property values as they relate to large-scale gas stations. WFDD reached out to Buc-ee’s regarding the report, but the company did not respond to a request for comment. The city of Mebane cited previous public hearings and research on the matter before it was unanimously approved by the council. The Buc-ee’s is expected to open in late 2026 or early 2027. It would be the company’s first location in North Carolina.
