An Update on Homelessness and Housing in Charlotte On any given night nearly three thousand people are homeless on Charlotte streets. Military veterans, families hit hard by recession and folks with debilitating illnesses and others make up the homeless population. City Leaders continue to develop housing plans and a program to move sheltered homeless people into permanent housing is underway. But the city's policies are not without controversy including recent posters discouraging citizens from giving homeless people handouts and a call to restaurants to stop offering leftover foods at their back door. We look at the state of the homeless and efforts to help them.
