Community Conversation- Holocaust Education and Anti-Oppression Action in our Community

Community Conversation- Holocaust Education and Anti-Oppression Action in our Community

Join local educators Jackie Fishman, Donna Tarney and John Cox to discuss the importance of first person Holocaust narratives in 2021. This conversation will provide important historical context to Susan's personal experience in Protective Custody PRISONER 34042, connecting it to other forms of bigotry, oppression and genocide. We invite you to discuss what we can learn from these stories and how this impacts us NOW. This virtual event is free to attend, but registration is required. Protective Custody PRISONER 34042 is a raw and impactful play written by Charles LaBorde and based on the memoir of well-known Charlotte Holocaust survivor Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz. In honor of National Holocaust Days of Remembrance, you can stream Protective Custody PRISONER 34042 for free April 4-11. Protective Custody PRISONER 34042 and this Community Conversation are sponsored by Culture Blocks- a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County. About the Speakers Jackie is the daughter of Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz, the subject of Protective Custody PRISONER 34042. She will share some of her mother's story of surviving the Holocaust, Susan's life in America, and Jackie's own work in Holocaust education with The Stan Greenspon Center of Peace and Social Justice. Donna Tarney is the Education Coordinator for the Greenspon Center. She brings 12+ years of teaching experience and a deep knowledge of Holocaust studies. John Cox is an associate professor of Global Studies at UNC Charlotte and director of the UNCC Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights studies. John will share thoughts on Holocaust Education, the rise in antisemitism and its connections to other forms of oppression in the United States and abroad.
