Gaston County Schools will cancel classes Friday, May 1, as teachers prepare to travel to Raleigh to protest low pay.

Like Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Gaston County will instead hold an optional teacher workday.

District officials said they will not have enough substitutes or central office staff available to cover teacher absences and operate schools safely.

North Carolina ranks 46th in the nation for average teacher pay.
