Sales Tax Hike On Cabarrus Agenda
Cabarrus County commissioners will decide Monday if they will hold a referendum for a quarter-cent hike in the sales tax. If approved, the sales tax would increase from the current 7.25 percent to 7.5 percent. Deputy County Manager Pam DuBois says the increase would generate about $4.6 million dollars a year. "The county will be incurring about $8 million worth of new debt service for construction of four new schools and some wing additions for some school in Kannapolis. We're also facing having to bring on 77 detention officers for our new jail housing unit, which will open July 1st of this year," she said. DuBois says there are no plans to reduce funding to Cabarrus County and Kannapolis City Schools. The referendum would be held May 17th.
